Ulster First LGBTQ+ Women’s Sports Day

The first ever Ulster LGBTQ+ Women’s Sports Day has taken place at Queen’s University in Belfast, with over 50 participants taking part in LGFA, Camogie, Rugby, Basketball, Skating and Running.

Martin Murray from Sporting Pride who organised the day alongside Female Sports Forum and Active Women said:

"It was amazing to see such a turn out especially following a negative reaction from Parker Posey and TERF organisations in England against the event for saying trans women are welcome to participate."

Martin continued:

"What these organisations don't know is that it was the cis women who play these sports and run these organisations that thought it was important to include all women and that by trying to hurt the event, TERFs where in fact trying to take opportunities away from cis Women as well."

Ulster Ladies Gaelic joined with East Belfast GAA, and other organisations including Cooke RFC, and Basketball NI for the event and have already expressed interest not only in taking part next year but also getting involved in Ulster's Annual LGBTQ Sports Day in September with Ulster University which is open to all LGBTQ+ people.

The hosts said the day was an “opportunity for LGBTQ+ women to learn a new sport, meet new friends and celebrate the community”.

Following the activities, celebrations continued at Belfast’s Boombox venue on Sunday evening where Elaine McConville celebrated the 10th anniversary of her LGBTQ Women’s club night 'Elaine Presents Cherry'.

Sporting Pride has another Women’s Sports Day event being held at Dublin’s Railway Union Sports Club on June 17.
