LGBTQ+ Sports and Wellness Opportunities in Cork
A number of different groups and organisations are working towards promoting physical activity and better health within the LGBTQ+ community in Cork. Below is an outline of some of the work which is being done.
Cork Front Runners
The Cork Front Runners are an LGBT+ running club who are a member of the Frontrunners International movement. Their goal is to improve the health of all members of the LGBT+ community through running, walking and socialising. They meet and train regularly on a Saturday morning and offer additional training sessions for more competitive runners. The group take part in park runs and organised events together but also have a social element in order to enable the development of friendships between community members.

Cork Rebels Football Club
The Cork Rebels were established in 2016 as an LGBT community team based in Cork City. They have a weekly five a side kickabout which includes a full training session consisting of a warmup and skill development. They play friendly matches throughout the year but their primary purpose is to provide a safe environment which is also fun for people of all sexualities. They believe that their club can strengthen the local LGBT community through friendships created outside of the club scene. The Rebels will be sending a team to represent their club at the EuroGames this July!

Cork Rebels FC Women’s Soccer 6 week Programme
The Cork Rebels will cater for a women’s group over a 6 week period this year. Training will take place at the Lough Community Centre from 3-4pm every Saturday. The plan is for the programme to focus on basic fitness, soccer skills and lots of fun! At the end, if there’s interest in carrying things forward, a meeting will be held to see what the best way to move forward is. Phone, e-mail or use facebook messenger to find out more!

LINC
LINC aims to improve the quality of life, health and well-being of all women who identify as lesbian or bisexual in Ireland. They help operate a number of physical activity programmes and sports related activities in Cork throughout the year. A Walking group meets every Tuesday at 11am to walk at an easy pace for about an hour before have tea and a chat afterwards. This group caters for all fitness levels. Badminton is also available and is hosted every Tuesday evening in Glountaune from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Finally, a LINC Boxing group train every Thursday from 8pm to 9.30pm at Douglas boxing club and is currently taking on new members.

Gay Project Cork
The Gay Project aims to promote better health in the gay, bi+, trans, MSM and queer male community in Cork. The Cork Frontrunners come under their umbrella as does a hill walking club for those interested in outdoor activities. In recent times they have ran Pilates and yoga classes, a drink less campaign and health checks at their facility on South Terrace in Cork City. Furthermore, healthy food cooking demos and workshops on making non-alcoholic cocktails have been hosted as part of their health promotion work. A range of information and resources on mental, sexual and social health are also made available to people who drop in.
